Army Foils Deadly Boko Haram Drone Attack in Borno, Intercepts Weaponized Device

MAIDUGURI — Troops of the Nigerian Army’s Operation Hadin Kai have successfully averted a potentially catastrophic attack, intercepting a weaponized drone deployed by Boko Haram terrorists targeting a military base in Borno State.

The interception, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, marks a significant victory in the military’s ongoing battle against the insurgents’ evolving technological threats.

Military sources confirmed that the device—a commercial-grade drone modified with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)—was brought down by the Army’s specialized anti-drone unit just kilometers from a Forward Operating Base in the Sambisa Forest axis.

Surveillance and Precision Strike

Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the operation in a statement, noting that vigilant troops detected the aerial threat through enhanced surveillance systems.

“Our troops, acting on credible intelligence, tracked and neutralized a hostile unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attempting to breach our defensive perimeter,” Nwachukwu stated. “The prompt action of our gallant soldiers prevented what was clearly intended to be a deadly strike on our positions.”

Following the interception, a rapid response team launched a counter-offensive on the suspected launch site, engaging a cluster of terrorists who were coordinating the attack.

Terrorists Neutralized

In the ensuing firefight, troops neutralized at least five insurgents and recovered a cache of arms, including:

  • Two AK-47 rifles.
  • A remote control station for the drone.
  • Several rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
  • Assorted bomb-making materials.

“The remnants of the terrorist cell fled with gunshot wounds, and our troops are currently on a manhunt to flush them out of the general area,” the statement added.

A Growing Tech Threat

Security analysts have raised alarms over the increasing use of drone technology by ISWAP and Boko Haram factions to conduct surveillance and drop explosives.

This latest success comes barely a week after intelligence reports indicated that ISWAP leaders had ordered a ramp-up in drone operations to counter the military’s air superiority. The swift foiling of this plot demonstrates the Army’s improved electronic warfare capabilities and readiness to counter these asymmetric tactics.

The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai has commended the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to report any suspicious aerial activities in their communities.
