‘Start a New Life’: Gov Yusuf Offers House, Hajj, and Wife-Matching Support to Father of Slain Family

KANO — In a move to provide succor to a man struck by unimaginable tragedy, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced a comprehensive welfare package—including a new house and full sponsorship for Hajj and Umrah—for Haruna Bashir, the man whose wife and six children were brutally murdered last week.

Governor Yusuf made the emotional offer on Wednesday during a condolence visit to the bereaved father in the Chiranci Dorayi area of the state.

The Governor, who appeared visibly shaken by the magnitude of the loss, declared that the state government would not only rebuild Bashir’s material life but also support his social rehabilitation, including assisting him to remarry when he is ready.

“We Will Not Abandon You”

Speaking directly to the grieving father, Governor Yusuf stated that the state bears a moral burden to ensure he does not face his trauma alone.

“No father should ever have to bury his entire family in one day,” Governor Yusuf said, holding Bashir’s hands. “This is a loss that shakes the very foundation of our humanity. As a government, we have approved a new, fully furnished house for you to move into immediately, so you do not have to live with the ghosts of this tragedy.”

The Governor detailed the package approved by the State Executive Council:

  • Housing: A new, furnished residence in a safe location.
  • Spirituality: Full sponsorship for the 2026 Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages to help him find spiritual solace.
  • Social Support: Full financial responsibility for his welfare and expenses for a new marriage, should he choose to start a family again.

Father Donates “House of Horror” to Allah

In a touching response that moved many present to tears, Haruna Bashir announced he would donate his current house—the crime scene where his wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children were slaughtered—to the community.

“I cannot live here anymore,” Bashir told the gathering. “I give this house to the Kano State Government to convert into an Islamiyya School. Let the voices of children learning the Quran replace the silence of my family.”

Death Penalty Awaits Killers

Turning to the issue of justice, Governor Yusuf’s tone hardened. He vowed to sign the death warrant for the perpetrators without hesitation once the courts deliver their verdict.

“I have directed the Attorney General to fast-track this prosecution,” Yusuf declared. “There will be no delay. The moment the judge says ‘guilty’ and sentences them to death, I will put my pen to paper. They will pay for every drop of blood they spilled.”

The Governor confirmed that security agencies have arrested the principal suspects and investigations are concluding.
