Defying the Odds: Inside Zenith Bank’s Bold N1.50 Interim Dividend Payout Amid Profit Slump
LAGOS, NIGERIA — In a move that has sent ripples of cautious optimism across the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), banking titan Zenith Bank Plc has announced an interim dividend of N1.50 per share for the half-year period ended June 30, 2026.
For thousands of retail investors and institutional shareholders bracing against a turbulent macroeconomic climate, the announcement comes as a welcome breather. Yet, beneath the celebratory surface lies a complex financial paradox: a generous 20% dividend hike delivered right on the heels of a notable profit-after-tax contraction.
How is one of Nigeria’s premier tier-1 financial institutions managing to reward its owners more generously while navigating a bottom-line dip? A closer look at the numbers tells a gripping story of resilience, heavier tax burdens, and strategic capital allocation.
The Numbers Behind the Headlines
According to the bank’s half-year financial statements filed with the NGX, Zenith Bank recorded group gross earnings of N1.90 trillion for the six-month period, reflecting a 25% tapering from the N2.52 trillion posted in the corresponding period of 2025.
Concurrently, the bank’s profit after tax (PAT) settled at N430.76 billion, marking a 19.1% decline from the N532.18 billion achieved in H1 2025.
Crucially, however, the bank’s core operational engine—measured by profit before tax (PBT)—actually ticked upward by 2% to N637.60 billion, up from N625.63 billion previously. The divergence between a stronger pre-tax performance and a lower net profit was largely driven by a sharp escalation in tax expenses, which more than doubled to N206.84 billion from N93.45 billion year-on-year. Consequently, earnings per share (EPS) adjusted to N10.48, compared to N12.95 in H1 2025.
Despite the softer net earnings, the board’s decision to elevate the interim payout from the N1.25 paid in the first half of 2025 to N1.50 per share signals robust liquidity management and an unwavering commitment to shareholder value.
