World Youth Skills Day: Lagos Ikoyi Elite Lions Club trains pupils on bead making
In commemoration of World Youth Skills Day 2026, Lagos Ikoyi Elite Lions Club, under Lions International District 404A3, organised a Basic Art of Bead Making training programme for pupils of Premier Day Nursery and Primary School and Raufu Williams Primary School, Surulere, Lagos.
The programme was organised in line with the Lions International Global Cause of Youth Development, with the aim of equipping children with practical vocational skills, promoting creativity, encouraging self-confidence, and inspiring entrepreneurship from an early age.
Through this initiative, the club reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people and contributing meaningfully to the educational development of the community.
Speaking at the occasion, President of Lagos Ikoyi Elite Lions Club, Lion Soledotun Abdulkarim-Yusuf, emphasized the importance of combining academic education with practical skills acquisition, noting that vocational skills help young people become innovative, self-reliant, and better prepared for future opportunities.
She encouraged the pupils to remain committed to learning, creativity, and excellence, while assuring them of the Club’s continued support for programmes that promote youth development and quality education.
According to her, “Today is more than just another day on the calendar. It is a day set aside globally to recognise the importance of equipping young people with practical skills that prepare them for the future. Skills empower individuals to become creative, productive, confident, and self-reliant.
“As members of Lions Clubs International, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to discover and develop their talents. Youth Development is one of our eight global causes, and we remain committed to creating opportunities that help young people grow into responsible and successful adults.”
Today’s Basic Art of Bead Making Training is a simple but meaningful step towards achieving that goal. Through this practical session, our pupils will learn creativity, patience, concentration, colour coordination, and the value of using their hands to create something beautiful. More importantly, they will begin to appreciate that every great entrepreneur starts by learning a skill.”
To our dear pupils, she added: “The knowledge you gain today may become the foundation of your future career or business. Remember that education is not only about reading books; it is also about learning practical skills that solve problems and create opportunities.
I sincerely appreciate the Surulere Local Government Education Authority for granting us the opportunity to partner with your schools on this meaningful project. I also thank the Head Teachers and members of staff for their cooperation and support.
The practical training session was facilitated by Mrs. Olusola Anuoluwapo Elizabeth, CEO of Marvliz Couture, who introduced the pupils to the basic principles of bead making. She demonstrated the use of different types of beads and accessories and guided the pupils through the process of designing and producing bracelets, anklets, and necklaces.
