World Cup: Why DR Congo’s famous statue fan won’t be available for opener

By Enitan Abdultawab

DR Congo’s iconic supporter Lumumba Vea will not be in the stands for the Leopards’ FIFA World Cup clash against Portugal after travel clearance delays prevented him from joining the team in time.

Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly known as Lumumba Vea, rose to international fame during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for his statue-like support of the Congolese national team, standing motionless throughout matches in tribute to independence hero Patrice Lumumba.

The celebrated supporter had been expected to accompany DR Congo to the World Cup, but administrative and entry-clearance issues have delayed his arrival, leaving the Leopards without one of their most recognisable figures for the Group K encounter with Portugal.

Lumumba Vea is no stranger to travel complications. Earlier this year, he missed DR Congo’s World Cup playoff against Jamaica after failing to secure a visa on time despite efforts to fast-track the process.

According to reports, the latest delay is again linked to travel documentation and clearance procedures, preventing him from reaching the United States ahead of DR Congo’s tournament opener.

However, he is expected to join the Congolese contingent later in the competition as the country’s president had reportedly intervened to help get his visas ready personally after the team pleaded for his presence.

Lumumba Vea has become a symbol of national pride in DR Congo, with players and officials previously lobbying for his inclusion in major tournaments because of the emotional boost his presence provides.

His absence will be felt by Congolese supporters as the Leopards make their long-awaited return to the World Cup stage against Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal.

Lumumba Vea will be available for DR Congo’s game against Uzbekistan next week.
