Why Ronaldo and I held our wedding at home – Georgina

By Adewale Adesewa

Georgina Rodríguez has opened up about why she and Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo chose to marry in the living room of their home rather than have the lavish wedding many expected.

The couple tied the knot in a private civil ceremony in Cascais, Portugal, on August 11, 2026, surrounded by their five children. Details of the ceremony were later revealed in an exclusive interview with Vogue.

For Rodríguez, the decision was less about luxury and more about creating a meaningful family memory.

She explained that, as a child, she imagined a traditional fairytale wedding featuring a grand castle, a carriage, a long wedding gown and a diamond crown.

However, her priorities changed as she grew older and built a family with Ronaldo.

“Now, I find myself saying: no. I desire something intimate, shared with my partner and our children, in the comfort of our home,” Rodríguez said.

She said the couple already have access to extraordinary luxury, including castles, houses, islands, horses and cars, making a private family celebration more special to them.

“We have access to castles, houses, islands, horses, and cars every day. However, an intimate gathering is something more unique for us,” she said.

Rodríguez said the living room was deliberately chosen because it is where the family experiences everyday life together.

“We chose to hold the ceremony in our living room, the place where we share breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and where we experience our daily lives,” she explained.

She also revealed the lasting memory she hopes the ceremony will create for their children.

“In 30 years, I want our children to remember that something wonderful occurred at this table, the wedding vows of our parents.”

The ceremony marked 10 years since Rodríguez and Ronaldo first met at a Gucci store in Madrid, where she was working as a sales assistant. The couple’s five children were present, while Rodríguez wore a white Gucci silk suit and Ronaldo wore a beige suit.

Following the civil ceremony, the family went to the Sanctuary of Fátima in Portugal, where the couple received a religious blessing. Reports also indicate that the pair have not completely ruled out holding a larger celebration with relatives and friends in the future.

The wedding therefore reflected Rodríguez’s changing view of marriage: rather than focusing on grandeur, she chose a setting connected to the family’s everyday life and the memories she wants their children to carry into the future.
