Why FG introduced drug integrity test for students — Marwa
By Kingsley Omonobi
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has explained that the Federal Government introduced the Drug Integrity Test Policy for students as a preventive and protective measure against substance abuse in tertiary institutions.
Marwa gave the explanation on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Abuja when he received the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by its National President, Comrade Sola Oladoja, at the NDLEA headquarters.
The students’ body expressed full support for the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking, commending Marwa’s leadership and the impact of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign across campuses.
Oladoja praised the NDLEA for its sustained crackdown on drug cartels and reaffirmed NANS’ support for the agency and the Federal Government’s youth-focused policies, including student loan initiatives and empowerment programmes.
In his response, Marwa said he remained proud of Nigerian students and stressed the importance of collaboration in tackling drug abuse within academic environments.
He warned that substance abuse poses serious risks to students’ health, academic progress, families, and society at large.
“We need to work with you on our efforts to rid our campuses of drug abuse because of the consequences to students’ health, their aspirations, and even their families, as well as society at large,” he said.
Addressing the Drug Integrity Test Policy, Marwa clarified that it is not punitive but designed to support early detection and intervention.
He explained that identifying drug use early makes treatment and rehabilitation more effective, adding that the policy is aimed at safeguarding young people and ensuring a healthier academic environment.
The visit ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthen collaboration in the fight against substance abuse on Nigerian campuses.
