Vanguard Economic Discourse holds today

•FAO, IFAD, others brainstorm on way forward for Nigeria’s agric, food security

The much-awaited Vanguard Newspapers’ brainstorming and networking event focusing on Nigeria’s agriculture sector and food security has kicked off in Lagos today.

The event, to be held   today at Civic Centre Victoria Island, Lagos, is bringing together global agricultural agencies and Nigerian sector stakeholders to address the challenges and proffer solutions.

The event, headlined by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), is coming also with strong backing of the world’s leading agricultural sector funding agency, the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) , an arm of the United Nations.

The Federal Government would be represented by a team from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security as well as the Ministry of Livestock Development.

It is noted that the event is the ninth edition of the Vanguard Economic Discourse with the theme, “Food Security and Socio-economic Stability: Options for Nigeria’s Agriculture Sector Rebound”.

Leading the discussions on the issues at stake in Nigeria’s capacity to feed itself, is Dr. Hussein Gadain, the Resident Representative of the UN/ FAO in Nigeria and to ECOWAS, has been slated to be the Keynote Speaker.

Accepting to play the role, the FAO stated that “Dr. Gadain looks forward to contributing to the discussions and engaging with the distinguished faculty and panelists to advance dialogue on Nigeria’s agricultural development”.

Mrs Dede Ahoefa Ekoue, Country Director, IFAD in Nigeria, will be on the Panel of Discussants at the event.

IFAD is expected to shed more light on its activities in Nigeria’s agricultural environment, addressing the challenges and the prospects for growth.

A group of eminent stakeholders in Nigeria’s agriculture and food value chain drawn from the public and private sector have been assembled to address the sector issues.

The Panel session would feature Dr Mrs Moji Davids, Managing Director, Xtralarge Farms & Resorts; Mohammed Magaji, President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN; and Arc. Kabir Ibrahim, President of Nigeria Agribusiness Group, NABG.

The eminent stakeholders would also include representatives of financial institutions with the Agric Desks of Commercial Banks in the formal and networking sessions.

The Vanguard Economic Summit has gained traction in the past eight years as a major public-private sector platform for reviews and cross-fertilization of economic development ideas by Nigeria’s public and private sector leaders.

The event is anchored by Professor Franklin Ngwu, Director, Public Sector Initiatives, at Lagos Business School
