Two die, two hospitalised after suspected drug consumption in Ogun

Two persons suspected to be students of Ogun State-owned Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, have reportedly died after allegedly consuming a substance described as “laughing gas,” while two others were hospitalised in Isara-Remo, Ogun State.
The incident was said to have occurred on Tuesday at Oke-Ola Phase II, Isara-Remo, where four young persons allegedly consumed the substance, believed to be a hard drug commonly abused by some youths.
A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Thursday, said the victims allegedly took what they referred to as “laughing gas,” with fatal consequences.
The source said, “The incident actually happened on Tuesday. What we learnt was that the students were taking what they called laughing gas. Two of the students died as a result of taking the hard drugs, while two others were hospitalised”.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident but said the police had yet to establish whether the deceased were students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic.
According to him, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Ogun State Police Command is investigating a suspected drug-related incident at Oke-Ola Phase II, Isara-Remo, where two persons were found dead and two others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming hard drugs,” Babaseyi said.
“The deceased have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy, while the survivors are receiving medical treatment. Investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The police spokesperson also cautioned members of the public against substance abuse.
“The Command warns against drug abuse and urges members of the public to avoid illicit substances,” he added.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. Repeated calls to the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Folorunso Adedayo, were not answered, while a WhatsApp message sent to her had yet to receive a response.
