This could be my year to win Ballon d’Or – Mbappe

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe believes this could finally be his year to win the Ballon d’Or, while dismissing Paris Saint-Germain’s success since his departure, according to the BBC.

The 27-year-old scored 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid last season but ended the campaign without a major trophy, while PSG won the Champions League for the second successive season since his exit.

Mbappe also won the World Cup Golden Boot with 10 goals, taking his tournament tally to a record 22, although France finished fourth.

Asked about PSG’s success without him, Mbappe said: “I can’t change it. The truth is that I really don’t care.”

PSG had never won the Champions League before Mbappe left for Real Madrid, but have now lifted the trophy in both seasons since his departure.

Despite scoring 90 goals in 107 appearances for Real Madrid, Mbappe is yet to win a major club trophy at the Bernabeu.

He believes his individual form could put him in contention for his first Ballon d’Or, with the award due to be presented on October 26.

“Of course this year could be good for me to win the Ballon d’Or. But journalists vote,” he said.

Mbappe’s highest finish in the award is third, which he achieved in 2023 while at PSG.

“I always think I’m the best [player in the world] but everyone has their own opinion,” he added.

The France captain said he was focused on helping Real Madrid rather than dwelling on their recent lack of silverware.

“My experience with Real Madrid says I shouldn’t think too long-term because a lot can change,” he said.

“I want to think how I can be ready, to help my team to win the game and to start the Champions League in a good way.”
