Police recover GPMG, AK-47, other weapons from suspected bandits in Plateau

JOS- The Plateau State Police Command has said it recovered sophisticated weapons from suspected bandits during an intelligence-led operation in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.
The police said the operation was carried out by a team of Mobile Policemen in a bush around Kafi Abu community, where the operatives encountered a group of suspected bandits.
The suspected criminals, however, fled into the surrounding forest upon sighting the security operatives.
Police Public Relations Officer, Plateau State Command, SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Jos on Saturday.
According to him, the operation was carried out on Friday following credible intelligence.
Alabo said: “On Friday, 28th August 2026, at about 08:23pm, while acting on credible intelligence, a team of Mobile Policemen led by the Commander, 81 PMF Bassa, embarked on an operation in the bush around Kafi Abu, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“During the operation, the team encountered a group of suspected bandits. Upon sighting the Police operatives, the suspects immediately fled into the surrounding forest.
“The operatives conducted a thorough search of the area and, as a result, recovered one GPMG with breech number T1102-20CH00007, a SARSILMAZ SAR762 MT, and one AK-47 rifle with breech number 1968M117479.”
The police spokesman said additional personnel had been deployed to the area, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
He added that an investigation had commenced into the incident, noting that further developments would be communicated to the public.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, commended the operatives for their courage and commitment to duty.
Faniyan reassured residents of the state of the Command’s determination to sustain efforts aimed at preventing criminal activities and protecting lives and property.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities within their communities to the nearest police station or other relevant security agencies.
