Police deny viral clip linked to abducted Oyo pupils, teachers

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media and falsely linked to the recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oyo State, saying the footage did not originate from Nigeria and is unrelated to the incident.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Friday, the Force said the clip was an outdated video being falsely shared to mislead the public and stir fear.

“This video is unrelated to the incident and is being used to spread misinformation and cause unnecessary panic,” the police said.

The Force warned that spreading unverified materials on social media could misinform the public and negatively affect ongoing security and rescue operations.

The police also disclosed that security measures had been strengthened following the abduction, with more operatives and intelligence assets deployed to support rescue efforts.

“Security agencies have intensified rescue efforts, deploying additional operational and intelligence resources to ensure the victims’ safe return,” the statement added.

While no additional operational details were provided, the Force maintained that all necessary resources were being mobilised to ensure the victims’ safe return.
