Osun 2026: Why we decided to vote – Octogenarians

Ile-Ife (Osun), Aug. 15, 2026 (NAN) — Some octogenarians on Saturday explained why they came out to vote in the ongoing Osun governorship election, saying they were motivated by the desire for good governance and a better future for the state.

The elderly voters, who spoke separately with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after casting their ballots at different polling units in Ile-Ife, expressed the hope that their votes would count and influence the outcome of the election.

Mrs Moria Aremu, who voted at L.A. Primary School, Ilode 1, Ward 007, Ife East Local Government Area, said she considered it her civic responsibility to participate in the election despite her advanced age.

“I have to perform my civic responsibility by casting my vote for a candidate of my choice, and my expectation is that my vote will count at the end of the election,” she said.

Another elderly voter, 87-year-old Pa Ibrahim Salam, said he would continue to participate in elections as long as he remained alive and in good health.

“As a good citizen of Nigeria, I must vote and contribute my quota towards the growth and development of our country, Nigeria,” Salam said.

He urged Nigerians to actively participate in elections by coming out to vote whenever they were called upon to exercise their franchise.

“We must not just sit down at home and be condemning one government or the other. Rather, we must take it up as our civic duty to come out to vote anytime there’s an election,” he said. (NAN)
