Ogundare, Obieze Lift Indian 80TH Independence Day Titles at Ikeja
The Indian Independence Day Cup 2026 Tournament at Ikeja Golf Club has produced winners in all the categories with Jimoh Ogundare and Linda Obieze emerging champions in the men and women’s categories.
This third edition was spectacular as it was used to mark the 80th independence anniversary of Indian.
With over 140 players drawn from across most of the golfing communities of Ikeja, Ikoyi, Lakowe, the Indian Independence Day Tournament lived up to billing with the golfers not sparing anything to be amongst the winners of the various categories.
At the end of a competitive outing, Ogundare with 38 points emerged the Overall winner of the men’s category on count back. He was rewarded with a trophy and a carton of vegetable oil. Wale Kalejaiye was first runner up with same 38points as Ogundare while Henry Gboneme (37points) was second runner up. Arun Sharma with 74 points emerged best Gross winner
In the women’s category, Linda Obieze emerged Overall winner with 36 points while Abiodun Hassan (33points) was runner up.
Tokunbo Ogunbiyi emerged men’s Longest Drive winner while Chichi Alamu won the ladies’ version. Zed Jituboh also won men’s Nearest to the Pin and Shot on the Green on Hole 17. Rasaki Muritala was runner up.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, Vice captain of the club, Ejiro Ogomigo, who represented the Captain, described the tournament as a huge success adding that the Indian community didn’t spare anything to serenade all participants at this edition.
“This is the third edition of the Indian Independence Cup. Every year there is improvement, of course this year there’s been major improvement.
“This is one tournament a lot of members look forward to play in, it is keenly contested, it is very challenging.
“For some reason the course today was extremely challenging, you can see the highest points today was 38 points compared to the previous year where we had about 40 points.”
A member of the Indian golf Community, Gagandeep Lakhanpal, expressed his excitement at celebrating their country’s 80th anniversary with their Nigerian friends at the Ikeja Golf Club.
“This is one of our ways to give back to the community. We are very happy with the massive turnout at the tournament. We hope to make it an annual event,” stressed the Indian Tournament organizing community member.
