Nigeria honours Benin Republic at 66th Independence anniversary celebration

Nigeria on Saturday joined the Government and people of the Republic of Benin to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the longstanding ties of friendship, regional cooperation and shared commitment to peace and security between the two neighbouring countries.
The colourful celebration, held at the iconic Amazone Square in Cotonou, featured military parades and cultural displays.
A statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 9 Brigade, Major Akinola Ajibola, said the Nigerian contingent, invited by the Government of the Republic of Benin, delivered one of the event’s standout performances.
The contingent, led by the Commander, 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, performed a ceremonial march past in both slow and quick time, earning applause from dignitaries and spectators.
According to the statement, the contingent displayed a high level of discipline, coordination and military precision during the parade.
The highlight of Nigeria’s participation was a silent drill display by the Nigerian Army, which showcased synchronisation, precision and advanced arms-handling skills.
The performance drew sustained applause from guests and spectators at the event.
Among those in attendance were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Ambassador Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim; the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the Republic of Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya; senior military officers; government officials; members of the diplomatic corps; and representatives of other friendly nations.
The Army said Nigeria’s participation underscored the cordial relationship between both countries and reflected its commitment to strengthening military diplomacy, promoting regional cooperation, and advancing peace and stability across West Africa.
According to the statement, the performance also highlighted the professionalism of the Nigerian Army while reinforcing the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
