Nigeria backs Shagari for NAM Youth leadership

ABUJA — The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the candidacy of Muhammad Bello Bala Shagari for leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization (NAMYO).

The endorsement was conveyed by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, which described Shagari, the National Representative of NAMYO Nigeria and Vice Chair for the Africa Region, as a distinguished youth leader with an impressive record of service, youth development and international diplomacy.

The Ministry said Shagari’s experience, integrity and leadership capacity, as well as his contributions to youth participation, international cooperation and constructive engagement among young people, make him eminently qualified to serve the organisation in a higher capacity.

Shagari, a former President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), is widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s most prominent youth leaders. He has played active roles in youth advocacy, international relations and youth diplomacy, both nationally and internationally.

NAMYO was established in 2022, following a recommendation by the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement, and is headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The organisation brings together young people across the 121 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, with a mandate to promote youth cooperation, leadership, peacebuilding, sustainable development and international solidarity.

The forthcoming election is particularly significant as Shagari, if elected, will become the first elected Chairperson of NAMYO since the organisation was established.

His candidacy is expected to further position Nigeria at the centre of youth diplomacy within the Non-Aligned Movement and strengthen the country’s role in advancing South-South cooperation and international youth engagement.

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development expressed confidence in Shagari’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of youth cooperation, peacebuilding, sustainable development and international solidarity among NAM member states.

Shagari is the grandson of the first elected President of Nigeria, the late Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR.
