MTN confirms 25GB free data, warns subscribers against fake links

LAGOS — MTN Nigeria has warned subscribers against fraudulent platforms and links offering fake 25GB anniversary giveaways, even as the telecommunications company confirmed that the 25GB data reward is genuine.
The warning followed the circulation of messages and links on social media and other online platforms claiming to offer subscribers free 25GB data to mark MTN’s 25th anniversary.
In a scam alert, MTN urged customers to disregard such offers unless they were accessed through its authorised platforms.
The telecom operator said the official MTN 25GB Anniversary Giveaway was available only through the MyMTN NG App and MTN eShop.
It cautioned subscribers against clicking on unverified links, disclosing personal information or making payments on platforms claiming to offer the anniversary giveaway.
“Please beware of fake MTN 25th Anniversary 25GB giveaway offers circulating online,” MTN warned.
The company added: “The official MTN 25GB Anniversary Giveaway is available ONLY via the MyMTN NG App and MTN eShop.
“Do not click on links, share your personal information or make payments on any other platform claiming to offer the giveaway.
“Only trust official MTN channels.”
The warning came as fraudulent messages appeared to be taking advantage of the genuine anniversary promotion to make the scam offers appear credible.
A source at MTN confirmed to Vanguard that the company had indeed given subscribers 25GB of free data as part of activities marking its 25th anniversary.
“Yes, we gave subscribers 25GB free yesterday to commemorate our 25th anniversary,” the source said.
However, MTN stressed the importance of accessing the promotion through its authorised channels, amid concerns that fraudulent platforms could exploit the legitimate offer to obtain customers’ personal information or lure them into making payments.
The telecom operator therefore advised subscribers to verify anniversary-related offers through its official channels before clicking on links or providing any information.
MTN specifically warned customers against making payments in exchange for the 25GB data, noting that any platform outside the MyMTN NG App and MTN eShop claiming to offer the promotion should be treated with caution.
The development underscores the risk of online fraudsters impersonating major brands and exploiting popular promotions to target consumers.
Subscribers were consequently advised against forwarding unverified giveaway messages and urged to rely on MTN’s official communication channels for confirmation of promotions and other customer offers.
