Mob beats two suspected robbers to death in Calabar

Two men suspected of robbery have been beaten to death by an angry mob in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident, Vanguard gathered, occurred on Saturday night, with the bodies of the deceased later abandoned along Ekpo Abasi Street, near Yellow Duke, in Calabar South.

A crowd reportedly gathered at the scene early Sunday morning to view the bodies before police personnel evacuated them.

An unconfirmed report indicated that one of the deceased might have been a scrap metal dealer operating in the area. However, authorities had yet to confirm the identity of either victim or the circumstances surrounding the allegation.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying preliminary findings indicated that the men were apprehended by residents who suspected them of involvement in a robbery before they were attacked.

“Police operatives who responded to the scene documented the incident and evacuated the bodies with the assistance of local government authorities,” he stated.

He said the remains had been deposited for preservation and identification.

According to him, investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the deceased.

The command condemned the incident and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.

“No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.

“We urge members of the public to desist from jungle justice and always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution,” Eitokpah stated.

The police said further details would be released as the investigation progresses.
