Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and former Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriotic leader whose legacy of discipline, integrity and selfless service to Nigeria remains enduring one year after his death.
In a statement commemorating the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing, Lalong said the late former President devoted his life to the service of the nation and left behind a legacy that continues to inspire many Nigerians.
“It is one year since Nigeria lost one of her most distinguished leaders, former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari.
As we commemorate this solemn anniversary, I join millions of Nigerians in honouring a statesman whose life was devoted to the service of our nation,” he said.
Lalong expressed gratitude for the confidence and support Buhari gave him during his tenure as Governor of Plateau State and Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, saying the opportunity allowed him to witness the late President’s leadership style at close range.
According to him, Buhari was a man of conviction who consistently placed Nigeria’s interests above personal comfort and remained committed to overcoming the country’s challenges through unity, hard work and accountability.
He recalled working closely with the former President on issues of peace, security, economic development and national cohesion, noting that Buhari was always willing to listen, engage constructively and support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.
Lalong also described Buhari as a humble leader whose respect for institutions earned him admiration within and outside the country.
Reflecting on Buhari’s administration, the former governor said history would continue to assess his contributions to infrastructure development, the fight against insecurity, anti-corruption reforms and social investment programmes.
He acknowledged that every administration faces challenges but maintained that Buhari remained steadfast in pursuing policies he believed were in the country’s best interest.
Lalong urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the late President’s personal discipline, modest lifestyle and commitment to public service, stressing that the greatest tribute to his memory would be for citizens to work together towards building a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.
He added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was continuing the task of nation-building through the Renewed Hope Agenda, which, according to him, deserves the support and cooperation of Nigerians.
On behalf of his family and the people of Plateau South Senatorial District, Lalong honoured Buhari as “a leader, mentor and friend whose service to our nation will never be forgotten.”
He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the late former President’s shortcomings, grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus, and continue to comfort his family and Nigerians mourning his passing.
