Just in: Yusuf nominates Garo as Kano Deputy Governor, seeks assembly approval
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has transmitted the name of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
The nomination was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the move is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.
The deputy governorship position became vacant following the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.
The governor, after what was described as wide consultations with key stakeholders, urged the Assembly to expedite action and grant approval for Garo’s nomination.
Garo, 48, is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in both elective and appointed positions.
He previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He also held positions as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
In the 2023 general elections, Garo was the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
The nomination, according to the statement, is part of efforts by the Yusuf administration to strengthen governance and ensure effective service delivery in the state.
