Governor Lawal distributes 72,000 bags of fertiliser, farm inputs to Zamfara farmers

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has distributed 72,000 bags of fertiliser, 200,000 litres of herbicides and other agricultural equipment to farmers across the state as part of efforts to boost food production.

The inputs, delivered through the Zamfara 2026 wet-season fertiliser programme, were launched on Friday at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, the state capital.

A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the state government received more than 120 trucks of fertilisers and other farm inputs for distribution to farmers.

Other items distributed include 100 crop residue crushers, 100 grass choppers, feed milling machines, improved pasture seeds, 20 motorcycles and 20 mobile phones for agricultural extension agents.

Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal described agriculture as central to Zamfara’s economy and development, saying the state had vast fertile land and hardworking farmers with a long history of agricultural activities.

He said the intervention was aimed at revitalising agriculture, strengthening food security, creating sustainable livelihoods and repositioning Zamfara as a major contributor to Nigeria’s agricultural economy.

“Farming is the main livelihood and a key to inclusive growth and sustainable development, helping to fight poverty, banditry, and crime,” the governor said.

Lawal said the administration’s goal was to transform farming from subsistence agriculture to a productive, technology-driven and market-oriented sector through improved inputs, mechanisation, irrigation, extension services, climate-smart practices and market access.

He added that the government had strengthened partnerships with the Federal Government, development agencies and international organisations to improve access to agricultural support programmes.

According to him, initiatives such as FADAMA III, NG-CARES, SPIN, ZACADEP, SAPZ and IFAD-supported programmes had enabled thousands of farmers to benefit from improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, irrigation facilities and modern farming techniques.

The governor said the interventions were designed to increase productivity, improve household incomes and encourage youth participation in agriculture.

The distribution will cover all 147 political wards across Zamfara’s 14 Local Government Areas. Each ward will receive 340 bags of fertiliser, while each local government area will get 8,000 litres of herbicides.
