Family Cancels Burial Plans for Gospel Singer ‘Omije Ojumi’ Amid Internal Dispute
LAGOS — The family of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as “Omije Ojumi,” has abruptly cancelled all burial arrangements previously scheduled for this week, citing unresolved internal disputes.
Lanre Alewilese, a gospel artiste and member of the burial planning committee, announced the suspension in a statement on Saturday, January 17, 2026. He confirmed that the decision affects the service of songs, candlelight procession, and interment originally slated for January 20 and 21.
“Totally Cancelled”
In a public notice shared via Instagram, Alewilese revealed that the committee had no choice but to halt proceedings due to “matters arising” within the deceased’s family.
“This is to inform you that all plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague, Lady Evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu a.k.a. Omije Ojumi, by the Burial Planning Committee have been totally cancelled,” the statement read.
“This decision becomes necessary due to some issues arising from and within her family. We are deeply sorry and regret the inconveniences.”
The Disrupted Schedule
Before the cancellation, the gospel music community had mobilized to honor the late singer. The itinerary included:
- Tuesday, Jan 20: A Service of Songs and Tribute Night at the LTV 8 Ground, Ikeja.
- Wednesday, Jan 21: A private interment for family and close associates.
Alewilese clarified in a video message that the suspension was a collective decision by the family and the committee, not a personal one. He noted that the family would update the public once they resolve the internal disagreements.
