The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his son for allegedly being in possession of four single-barrel guns concealed in a sack.
The suspects, identified as Tibi Friday, 68, and his son, Oyabrade Tibi, 36, both from Futoro Gbene Community in Ekeremor Local Government Area, were intercepted on Monday at about 10:30 a.m. along the Igbogene-Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa.
The arrest was made by operatives of the Police Anti-Vice Unit during a routine stop-and-search operation.
According to the command, the suspects were travelling in a tricycle to Abua in neighbouring Rivers State when they were stopped and searched.
During the operation, officers recovered four single-barrel guns concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yenagoa, for further investigation.
He said preliminary findings indicated that the suspects were travelling to Abua when the firearms were discovered.
Mohammed added that the command is investigating the source of the firearms and working to identify any other persons who may be connected with the case.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Bayelsa State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Iyamah Daniel Edebor, to tackling the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes across the state.
The command also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible and timely information to assist security agencies in protecting lives and property.
