Ecstasy as Arugba leads Osun procession with sacred votary
— Adams seeks FG support, new innovations

OSOGBO — There was excitement among worshippers and participants at the Osun-Osogbo Festival as the Arugba, Osunbunmi Moradeke, led the annual procession into the Osun Sacred Grove with the sacred votary for the first time since her selection two years ago.
Moradeke was selected through the Ifa divination process in 2025 following the retirement of the previous Arugba after she got married.
However, Moradeke’s physical condition prevented her from carrying the sacred votary during last year’s festival, with the responsibility instead performed by the Baba Osun.
Her appearance at the grove this year with the votary generated excitement among worshippers, who offered prayers and expressed thanksgiving, a major feature of the annual festival.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, represented at the event by his Deputy, Kola Adewusi, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to preserving the state’s cultural heritage and protecting the Osun Sacred Grove, a globally recognised heritage site.
Adewusi said the state government would continue to support indigenous cultural activities capable of promoting Osun State and its heritage to the world.
He said, “As we celebrate this sacred tradition, may the blessings of Osun continue to bring peace, prosperity and progress to our dear state.
“Our administration’s commitment to preserving Osun’s rich cultural heritage and protecting the Osun Sacred Grove as a globally treasured heritage site remains unwavering.”
Also speaking, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, called for greater use of technology and digital platforms to expand the global reach and economic impact of the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival.
Adams said technology could play a significant role in preserving Yoruba cultural heritage, attracting international audiences and connecting younger generations with the traditions of their ancestors.
He said, “First, we must leverage technology to enhance the festival experience. This includes live streaming events to global audiences, developing interactive digital platforms for cultural education, and using social media to engage younger generations worldwide.”
He also called for greater involvement of the Federal Government and the introduction of new innovations to strengthen the festival’s global appeal and economic benefits.
