By Innocent Anaba

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, will convene its 2026 International Conference in Dakar, Senegal, from September 21 to 25, bringing together judicial, government and legal experts to examine the future of regional justice and integration.

The conference, themed, “ECOWAS Court of Justice at the Crossroads: Justice, Innovation, Human Rights Protection and the Future of Regional Integration in West Africa,” will draw senior judicial and government officials from member states, heads of regional and national courts, legal practitioners, academics, civil society organisations, development partners, international organisations and media representatives.

Organisers said the conference comes at a critical stage in the development of the court and the broader regional integration process, providing stakeholders an opportunity to address emerging challenges and strengthen justice delivery, human rights protection and regional cooperation.

Seven thematic sessions have been scheduled to examine key issues confronting regional justice.

They include human rights jurisprudence; enforcement and compliance with court decisions; artificial intelligence and data protection; arbitration and alternative dispute resolution; the proposed appellate chamber; environmental justice; and refugee protection and forced displacement.

Discussions will focus on improving compliance with ECOWAS Court decisions, strengthening human rights protection, harnessing digital innovation and addressing emerging challenges linked to environmental degradation, displacement and commercial disputes.

The five-day conference will feature plenary sessions, expert panels, roundtable discussions and an exhibition aimed at promoting knowledge-sharing and building partnerships among stakeholders.

The organisers said the conference would culminate in actionable recommendations and an Outcome Document outlining strategic priorities for the future of the ECOWAS Court and regional integration.

Participants will also examine ways to make the regional justice system more accessible, innovative and responsive to human rights concerns across West Africa.
