‘Don’t be overwhelmed by Tinubu’s appointment’ – PDP tells Yari
By Luminous Jannamike
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday, dismissed Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari’s projection that the All Progressives Congress, APC, will retain the presidency beyond 2031, accusing the newly appointed Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council of getting carried away by his new position.
The party said Yari should first prove his mettle by delivering the mandate given to him by President Bola Tinubu before making projections about elections that are still years away.
Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, told Vanguard in Abuja that Yari was being ‘overzealous’ with the appointment.
“I think the Senator is simply being overzealous with the appointment given to him by Mr President as Director-General,” he said.
“At the moment, he should focus more on how he can deliver on the mandate given to him before talking about 2031. For now, he should concentrate on that rather than making statements that are not even right.”
Jungudo also rejected any suggestion that the opposition had already conceded the 2027 presidential contest or the presidency beyond 2031 to the ruling party.
“As to whether the opposition has already conceded 2027 to Mr President or is even conceding power to the APC beyond 2031, no, no, no, not at all,” he said.
“That is a topic for discussion another day. For now, we are mainly concentrating on the forthcoming elections.”
He further warned Yari against allowing his appointment to get into his head.
“He should not be overwhelmed by this singular honour given to him by the President. He should relax, concentrate and focus on the mandate given to him by Mr President,” Jungudo said.
Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, had made the controversial projection at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after returning from an overseas trip.
