Diphtheria: Bauchi says outbreak under control as schools reopen

BAUCHI — As schools reopen for the new academic term, the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BSPHCDA) has assured residents that the diphtheria situation in the state is under control.

The assurance came amid concerns among parents and other Nigerians over whether schools in states that have recorded cases of the vaccine-preventable bacterial infection should reopen.

The Executive Chairman of BSPHCDA, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, said Bauchi was currently recording only sporadic cases of diphtheria.

“The situation is under control in Bauchi; we are only seeing sporadic cases,” Mohammed said.

Schools across Bauchi State are scheduled to resume for the new academic term on September 14, 2026.

Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable bacterial infection that can spread from person to person, particularly in crowded settings, making schools a key area of concern for parents and health authorities.
