The presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party for the 2027 general elections, Aliyu Bin Abbas, has said that democracy must deliver tangible benefits to citizens, including security, prosperity, justice and economic opportunities.
In a Democracy Day message titled “Democracy Day Message to Nigerians,” Abbas said democracy should be measured not only by the conduct of elections but also by its ability to improve the lives of citizens.
“As the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party for the 2027 general elections, I believe democracy must go beyond periodic elections. It must deliver security, prosperity, justice, quality education, affordable healthcare, reliable electricity and economic opportunities for every Nigerian, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or social status,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria is endowed with abundant human and natural resources but requires visionary leadership, accountable governance and a renewed commitment to national unity and development to achieve its full potential.
Abbas described June 12 as a symbol of courage, resilience, justice and the determination of Nigerians to build a nation governed by the will of the people.
“Today, we commemorate Democracy Day, a historic occasion that reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless patriots who struggled to secure the freedoms and democratic rights we enjoy today. June 12 is more than a date; it is a symbol of courage, resilience, justice and the collective determination of the Nigerian people,” he said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the ADP candidate acknowledged the country’s progress while noting that many citizens continue to face significant challenges.
“While democracy has endured, millions of Nigerians still grapple with insecurity, unemployment, poverty, inadequate infrastructure, rising living costs and limited opportunities, particularly for young people and women,” he said.
Abbas called on Nigerians, especially the youth, to remain actively involved in the democratic process, stressing that the future of the country depends on citizens’ participation and vigilance.
“The future of our nation depends on our collective participation, vigilance and determination to build a better Nigeria,” he stated.
He added that Nigeria can become a nation where merit is rewarded, public service is people-centred and every citizen has the opportunity to succeed.
“On this Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in Nigeria and our commitment to a stronger, safer, more prosperous and more united nation,” he said.
He also prayed for peace, progress and continued development across the country.
