Benin-Asaba highway gridlock gets global attention after Al Jazeera Report

The worsening traffic gridlock on the Benin–Asaba Highway has attracted international attention following a report by global news network Al Jazeera on the persistent crisis.

The major highway, which links Edo and Delta states, has in recent times witnessed severe traffic congestion, leaving motorists and commuters stranded for hours.

The development has raised concerns among road users, transport operators and residents who depend on the route for movement between the two states and other parts of the country.

Al Jazeera’s report has now brought the situation to a wider international audience, highlighting the challenges faced by motorists using the busy corridor.

The Benin–Asaba Road is a major transportation route in the South-South region and serves as an important link for the movement of people and goods.

Meanwhile, last week, Minister of Works, David Umahi, apologised to commuters and residents of Edo and Delta states over the deplorable condition of the Benin–Sapele Road, which has caused untold hardship to the people.

The minister also ordered the arrest of the contractor and concessionaire, as well as others found removing asphalt from federal roads without authorisation.

Umahi offered the apology and issued the directive on Tuesday in Benin during an inspection tour of some major roads in Edo State.
