Again, Obasa in the Eyes of the Storm

Since the dramatic impeachment saga that briefly shook the Lagos State House of Assembly, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has remained a familiar name in the ever-turbulent theatre of Lagos politics. And just when it appeared the political waters were settling, the veteran lawmaker has once again found himself at the centre of fresh whispers.

This time, the intrigue is coming from Agege, his familiar political backyard.

During the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, two politicians regarded as Obasa loyalists, Ganiyu Egunjobi and Azeez Yusuf, failed to secure the party’s tickets for Agege Constituencies 1 and 2, respectively. The development reportedly did not go down quietly.

Obasa, who himself secured the APC ticket to contest the House of Representatives election in 2027, was said to have thrown his weight behind the two aspirants. But despite his intervention, Egunjobi and Yusuf could not clinch the coveted tickets.

And then came the political twist.

Unwilling to abandon their ambitions, both politicians reportedly moved out of the APC and secured tickets on the platform of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, to contest the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election. That move has now opened another intriguing chapter in the Obasa political story.

Society Watch gathered that tongues have begun wagging in political circles, with some accusing the Speaker of secretly encouraging the movement of his loyalists to another political platform. The whispers have inevitably triggered the familiar “anti-party” question.

But those close to Obasa have swiftly pushed back against the insinuation.

His supporters insist that the Speaker had no hand in the decision of Egunjobi and Yusuf to leave the APC, maintaining that the two politicians independently made their political choices after losing out in the primaries.

For now, the allegations remain allegations. But the development has added yet another intriguing subplot to Obasa’s already colourful political narratives.
