7 countries with the most churches in the world

By Enitan Abdultawab

Christianity has a strong presence in many parts of the world, with some countries having tens of thousands of churches.

A ranking shared by StatiSense on X lists the seven countries with the highest estimated number of church buildings globally. The figures are based on registered churches, meaning the actual number could be higher in countries where house churches and unregistered congregations are common.

Here are the seven countries on the list:

United States — 350,000 to 380,000 churches

The United States ranks first, with an estimated 350,000 to 380,000 church buildings.

The country’s long Christian history and religious diversity have contributed to the large number of churches, ranging from small local congregations to large megachurches.

Brazil — 280,000 to 300,000 churches

Brazil ranks second, with an estimated 280,000 to 300,000 churches.

The country has a large Christian population, with Catholicism remaining prominent while Evangelical and Pentecostal movements have expanded significantly over the years.

Nigeria — 100,000+ churches

Nigeria ranks third globally, with more than 100,000 churches.

The country’s large Christian population, particularly the strong presence of Pentecostal churches, has contributed to its position on the list. Catholic and mainline Protestant denominations also have a significant presence across the country.

Russia — 90,000 churches

Russia is estimated to have about 90,000 churches, placing it fourth on the list.

Many of the country’s churches are affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church. Religious activity also increased following the collapse of the Soviet Union, when religious restrictions were eased.

Mexico — 88,000 churches

Mexico comes fifth with approximately 88,000 churches.

The country has a longstanding Catholic tradition, while Evangelical and other Christian denominations have also expanded, creating a more diverse religious landscape.

Philippines — 85,000 churches

The Philippines has an estimated 85,000 churches, ranking sixth.

It is one of Asia’s most predominantly Christian countries, with Catholicism forming the majority. Evangelical and independent Christian groups also have a growing presence.

China — 70,000+ churches

China rounds off the list with more than 70,000 churches.

The figure refers to registered places of worship. However, the actual number may be considerably higher because of the presence of house churches and other unregistered Christian congregations.

StatiSence, however, said that the figures cited in the original ranking are estimates of registered church buildings and should not be interpreted as an official global census of churches.
