Tradition or Terror? Police Arrest Chief Organizer Over Viral ‘Rape Festival’ in Delta State

OZORO — What was meant to be a celebration of cultural heritage in Isoko North Local Government Area quickly descended into chaos and national outrage. The Delta State Police Command has launched a massive crackdown, arresting the chief organizer and four other suspects connected to the mass harassment and sexual assault of women during the highly controversial Ozoro Festival.

The arrests come just hours after disturbing video clips surfaced on social media, prompting the Delta State Government to fiercely condemn the incidents as “barbaric and unacceptable.”

The Viral Horror: “Tradition” vs. Abuse

The controversy erupted earlier this week when multiple harrowing videos began circulating on X (formerly Twitter). The footage depicted dozens of young men aggressively chasing lone women through the streets of Ozoro, groping, and physically manhandling them.

Online, the incident was quickly dubbed a “rape festival” by outraged Nigerians. However, the videos sparked a fierce digital debate. The Cultural Defence: Some local commentators defended the mob’s actions, claiming it is a long-publicised tradition. They argued that women are strictly warned to stay indoors during this specific period or face the “masquerade punishment.”

The Public Outcry: Human rights advocates and the broader public violently rejected this defense, maintaining that no cultural practice justifies sexual violence, physical assault, and the public humiliation of women.

The Crackdown: Police Arrest Chief Organizer

Responding swiftly to the national outcry, the Delta State Police Command moved in to dismantle the ring of abusers.

The Arrests: Police operatives successfully apprehended five individuals directly linked to the street assaults, including the chief organizer of the festival.

The Command’s Stance: The Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, officially ordered a full-scale, comprehensive investigation into the events. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrests and assured the public that the command is actively hunting down other perpetrators captured in the viral footage.

“Barbaric and Unacceptable”: Delta State Government Reacts

The Delta State Government has unequivocally distanced itself from the atrocities, issuing a stern warning to cultural institutions across the state.

Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, released a hard-hitting statement condemning the weaponization of culture to commit crimes. “The Delta State Government strongly condemns the harassment of ladies and the reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival,” Aniagwu declared. “Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society.”

He explicitly warned that cultural celebrations must never be used as a shield for criminal behavior, reaffirming the state’s zero-tolerance policy for gender-based violence.

The government has further directed community leaders and organizers of all traditional festivals across the state to implement strict safety measures to prevent a recurrence of such heinous acts.

As investigations deepen, human rights groups are closely watching the Delta State Police Command to ensure the arrested suspects face the full weight of the law.
