‘The People Called Me’: Oriyomi Hamzat Reveals Why He Joined Oyo Guber Race

IBADAN — Popular broadcaster and human rights activist, Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat, has declared that his entry into the 2027 Oyo State governorship race is not a personal ambition but a direct answer to the “call of the people.”

Hamzat, the Chairman of Agidigbo 88.7 FM, revealed his primary motivation during his official declaration in Ibadan over the weekend, stating that he can no longer limit his impact to radio advocacy and philanthropy when the masses are demanding executive action.

“Charity Is Not Enough”

Addressing a massive crowd of supporters, the media mogul explained that while he has spent years feeding the hungry and fighting for the oppressed, he has realized the limitations of private charity.

“I have spent years fighting for the voiceless, feeding the hungry, and seeking justice for the oppressed through the airwaves,” Hamzat told the cheering gathering. “But I have realized that charity is not enough. Policy is the ultimate tool for liberation.”

He emphasized that the people of Oyo State have “called him” to move from talking about problems to fixing them from the Agodi Government House.

A Divine Mandate

Hamzat described the move as a “divine mandate,” insisting that his administration would focus on converting the groans of the common man into tangible policies.

“The people of Oyo State have called me, and I have answered,” he stated. “This is about moving beyond complaints to creating solutions. It is about governance that wears a human face.”

Shaking the Political Table

The declaration has unsettled the established political order in the state. Hamzat warned that the 2027 election would not be business as usual, framing the contest as a battle between money-bag politicians and a people-centered movement.

“They have money, but we have the people,” he asserted. “They rely on structures built on deceit; we rely on a movement built on truth. 2027 will not be about parties; it will be about the person who feels the pain of the people.”

From Activism to Politics

Hamzat is banking on his massive grassroots following and his reputation as a fearless advocate for justice—highlighted by his role in the Timothy Adegoke case—to propel his ambition. While he has not yet announced his political party, his entry is widely seen as a significant disruption to the status quo.
