The General’s Gift: Obasanjo Commemorates 89th Birthday with Free Medical Mission for 10,000 Lagosians

ABUJA — Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is celebrating his 89th birthday not with a lavish banquet, but with a massive humanitarian “giveaway” aimed at saving lives.

To mark his upcoming anniversary on March 5, 2026, the elder statesman has launched a large-scale medical outreach targeting no fewer than 10,000 beneficiaries across the suburbs of Lagos State. The initiative, organized through the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF), reflects the former President’s lifelong commitment to nation-building and the welfare of underserved Nigerians.

The Foundation, which has historically restored hearing to thousands of Nigerians, is specifically targeting elderly citizens, children, and vulnerable families for this birthday mission. As the “General” enters his 89th year, he remains active in both national policy—recently urging reforms in institutions like NOUN—and grassroots humanitarianism.

The “Lagos Medical Mission” Schedule

The outreach, themed as a “legacy-driven humanitarian initiative,” will provide comprehensive healthcare services completely free of charge. According to the Foundation’s CEO, Dr. Olalekan Makinde, the exercise follows a strict itinerary:

  • February 27 (Friday): Ijede LCDA Council Hall, Ikorodu.
  • February 28 (Saturday): Imota Mini Stadium, Ikorodu.
  • March 2 – March 4 (Monday–Wednesday): Alade Stadium, Command Road, Agbado/Oke-Odo, Alimosho.

Residents in these areas are advised to arrive early, as services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Comprehensive Care: What Beneficiaries Will Receive

The mission aims to tackle prevalent health challenges that often go untreated in low-income communities. Specialized Care: Free ear care services including hearing aids, and detailed eye screenings with the provision of prescription glasses and referrals for surgery. Cardiovascular Health: Blood pressure checks, heart health assessments, and cardiovascular screenings. General Medicine: Consultations, diagnosis, and the distribution of essential medications at no cost. Counseling: Preventive medical counseling to help residents manage long-term health.

A Legacy of Service

Chief Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, stated that this 89th-anniversary project is a tribute to the “Ebora Owu’s” enduring legacy. By shifting the celebration from the Presidential Library in Abeokuta to the streets of Lagos, the former leader continues to champion the cause of accessible healthcare.
