The Ramadan Shift: INEC Moves 2027 Presidential Election Forward to January in Revised Timetable
ABUJA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially altered the course of Nigeria’s next political cycle, bringing forward the dates for the 2027 general elections to prevent a disruptive clash with the holy month of Ramadan.
In a dramatic shift announced on Thursday, February 26, 2026, INEC released a revised timetable that reschedules the highly anticipated Presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, January 16, 2027. The Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will now follow on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
The adjustment immediately follows President Bola Tinubu’s assent to the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which the National Assembly explicitly passed earlier this month to grant INEC the legal flexibility to alter statutory election timelines.
Beyond the 2027 general elections, the new Electoral Act has also forced INEC to tweak its off-cycle election calendar for 2026. The commission announced a minor adjustment to the upcoming Osun State governorship election. Originally slated for August 8, the critical off-cycle poll has been moved back one week to Saturday, August 15, 2026, ensuring full compliance with the updated statutory pre-election activity windows.
The Ramadan Clash and the Push for Electoral Flexibility
Under the repealed 2022 Act, INEC initially scheduled the presidential poll for February 20, 2027. However, civic leaders and lawmakers raised widespread alarm that the original dates fell squarely within Ramadan, potentially decimating voter turnout, straining logistical coordination, and undermining the inclusivity of the electoral process.
Legislative Action: Responding to the crisis, the Senate and House of Representatives passed a harmonized Electoral Bill 2026, amending Clause 28(1) to adjust the mandatory election notice period.
INEC’s Compliance: “Following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, the commission has reviewed and realigned the Schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework,” stated Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
The New 2026 Political Roadmap
With the presidential election date moved up by more than a month, political parties face a significantly accelerated schedule for their internal democratic processes.
According to the revised timetable, key milestones include: Party Primaries: Political parties must conduct their primaries, including the resolution of internal disputes, between April 23 and May 30, 2026. Presidential Campaigns: Official campaigning for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will flag off on August 19, 2026. Governorship Campaigns: State-level campaigns will commence on September 9, 2026.
INEC reiterated that all political campaigns must legally terminate exactly 24 hours before election day, warning that the commission will strictly enforce the new timelines.
Osun Governorship Poll Also Rescheduled
Beyond the 2027 general elections, the new Electoral Act has also forced INEC to tweak its off-cycle election calendar for 2026.
The commission announced a minor adjustment to the upcoming Osun State governorship election. Originally slated for August 8, the critical off-cycle poll has been moved back one week to Saturday, August 15, 2026, ensuring full compliance with the updated statutory pre-election activity windows.
