Shock in Bwari: PDP Candidate Steps Down for APC as Wike Tightens Grip on FCT Polls
ABUJA — The political landscape of the Bwari Area Council shifted overnight as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate, Julius Adamu, officially stepped down for his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, Joshua Ishaku Musa.
Coming just 72 hours before the Saturday, February 21, polls, the move follows a series of high-level strategic meetings brokered by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The announcement, made on Wednesday afternoon, sent shockwaves through the opposition camp, effectively handing the APC a major advantage in one of the FCT’s most contested councils.
Despite the realignment in Bwari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the names of all cleared candidates will remain on the ballot. The Status: “The ballot papers are already printed and being distributed,” an INEC source told nuus.ng. “While a candidate can step down, the party’s logo remains, and votes cast for that logo will technically count for the party, though the candidate has withdrawn.”
As the clock ticks toward Saturday, the APC now moves into the Bwari contest with a unified front, while the PDP faces an uphill battle to keep its supporters from migrating to the ruling party.
“Two Brothers Cannot Fight”
Addressing his supporters in Bwari, Adamu cited personal conviction and the “overriding interest” of the council for his withdrawal. The Reason: “I have been in deep consultation with the FCT Minister,” Adamu stated. “I have come to the conclusion that Joshua and I are brothers. It will not be nice for two brothers to kill themselves over one office.” The Directive: He urged his loyalists to collapse their structures and cast their votes for the APC candidate on Saturday.
The Wike Factor: Infrastructure for Votes
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who attended the realignment ceremony, did not hide his role in the deal. He promised the people of Bwari massive infrastructure rewards in exchange for their support of the “Renewed Hope” candidate. The Promise: “If you vote for Joshua, I will do more roads in Bwari,” Wike declared. “Let nobody make any mistake; on Saturday, come out and make sure that Joshua wins.”
PDP in Crisis?
The Bwari withdrawal creates a massive vacuum for the PDP, which has already been battling internal leadership disputes and court cases. While the PDP state executive has yet to issue a formal response, the defection is being seen as a tactical win for the APC-led FCT administration, which is desperate to “flip” the capital from its previous opposition-leaning status.
