‘Don’t Let Down Your Guard’: DHQ Flags Markets, Parks as High-Risk Zones for Attacks

ABUJA — The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued an urgent security advisory to all Nigerians, charging citizens to drastically heighten their vigilance in public spaces as criminal elements seek “soft targets” to launch attacks.

In a statement released on Friday, the military high command warned that markets, churches, mosques, motor parks, and other crowded gatherings face an elevated risk of infiltration by terrorists who are fleeing intense military pressure on the frontlines.

“Be the Eyes and Ears”

The advisory, circulated via the DHQ’s official channels, explicitly tasked the public to act as the first line of defence. The military hierarchy noted that while troops are neutralising threats in the forests, the “asymmetric” nature of the war requires citizens to be hyper-aware of their immediate environment.

“Remain alert in crowded places, markets, churches, and public gatherings,” the statement read. “Promptly report any unusual behaviour or persons to the nearest security agency. Remember to always maintain situational awareness.”

Security sources attribute this new warning to intelligence reports suggesting that insurgents, having been dislodged from their strongholds in the North East and North West, are attempting to embed themselves in civilian populations to orchestrate “mass casualty” events using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Police Deploy to Schools

The warning comes just hours after the Lagos State Police Command deployed tactical teams to top private schools in Ikeja and other strategic locations following an “attack scare.”

Security analysts warn that terrorists often use panic in urban centers to distract from their losses on the battlefield.

Call to Action

The DHQ has urged Nigerians not to dismiss any suspicious movement as “normal.”

  • What to watch for: Unattended bags in public areas, individuals wearing bulky clothing in hot weather, or unknown persons loitering around sensitive infrastructure.
  • What to do: Do not engage. Contact the nearest police station or military checkpoint immediately.

“The security of the nation is a collective responsibility,” the DHQ affirmed. “We will do our part to crush the enemy, but you must do your part to deny them a target.”
