C’River: Police launch investigation into woman found dead in church toilet
By Ike Uchechukwu, CALABAR
The Cross River State Police Command has commenced investigations into the death of a woman, Blessing Ayebe, whose body was discovered inside the toilet facility of a church in the Ikot Ansa area of Calabar Municipality.
Vanguard gathered that the body was found around 9 p.m. last Monday, days after the woman was reported missing by her family.
Findings showed Ayebe attended a service at the Presbyterian Church, Ikot Ansa Parish, on Saturday, June 28, but never returned home afterwards.
Her son, Saviour Ayebe, first alerted the family to her disappearance, prompting her daughter, Peace Ayebe, to report the matter at the Federal Housing Police Station in Calabar on Tuesday, July 1.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the command was working to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy to determine the cause of death.
“No suspect has been identified or arrested at this stage, as there is presently no evidence of foul play,” Eitokpah said.
He added: “Investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated as they unfold.”
Vanguard further learned that the deceased’s remains have been deposited at the morgue of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) pending autopsy results.
As at press time, police was yet to establish how or when the deceased died, or how long her body may have lain undiscovered inside the church facility before she was found.
