‘She Called Me a Demon’: Court Remands Angela Okorie in Prison Over Cyber-stalking of Mercy Johnson

ABUJA — The bitter feud between two Nollywood heavyweights has culminated in a prison cell, as the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered the remand of actress Angela Okorie in the Suleja Correctional Centre.

The remand order follows her arraignment by the Nigeria Police Force on a three-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation of her colleague, Mercy Johnson-Okojie.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the directive after the actress pleaded not guilty to the charges, rejecting her counsel’s plea to release her on bail immediately.

From Lagos to a Cell in Abuja

The drama began on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, when operatives of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) stormed Okorie’s residence in Lagos.

According to police sources, the actress was arrested and detained overnight at the State Criminal Investigation Department (Panti) before being flown to Abuja on a 6:00 AM flight on Wednesday to face trial.

The prosecution, led by Victor Okoye, accused Okorie of using her social media handles (Instagram and TikTok) to transmit messages that were “grossly offensive, false, and aimed at causing annoyance, inconvenience, and criminal intimidation” to Mercy Johnson.

Specifically, the charge sheet alleges that Okorie conspired with one Ifeoma Mbonu (currently at large) to label Mercy Johnson a “blood-sucking demon” and “witch,” violating Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.

Bail Denied

Defense counsel Alex Ejesieme (SAN) attempted to secure immediate freedom for the actress, moving an oral application for bail. He argued that the charges were bailable and that his client—a mother and public figure—would not flee justice.

However, Justice Nwite declined the oral request. “The application must be formal,” the Judge ruled. He ordered that Okorie be remanded in custody until Friday, January 30, when the court will hear her bail motion.

Industry Reacts

The swift arrest and detention have sparked outrage among some of Okorie’s allies. Filmmaker Stanley Ajemba took to social media to blast the police for what he termed an “abuse of power.”

“You arrested Angela Okorie at midnight, flew her to Abuja at 6 AM, and remanded her by noon? So the judiciary can work this fast?” Ajemba wrote. “Using the police to settle personal scores is oppression. Sue for defamation if you are aggrieved, but don’t weaponize the state.”

Background of the Beef

This legal battle is the climax of a long-running online war. For months, Angela Okorie has made series of damaging allegations against Mercy Johnson, claiming the star uses “dark powers” to suppress colleagues in the industry—claims she has never substantiated with evidence.

Mercy Johnson, who largely ignored the attacks throughout 2025, appears to have finally drawn the line, opting for the legal route to clear her name.
