Senegal Clinch AFCON 2025 Title After Dramatic Extra-Time Win Over Morocco
RABAT — The Teranga Lions of Senegal have retained their status as the kings of African football, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in a chaotic and unforgettable AFCON 2025 final to claim their second continental crown.
In a match defined by high drama, a walk-off protest, and a missed penalty, midfielder Pape Gueye emerged as the hero, firing home a thunderous strike in the 94th minute to silence the 66,000-strong home crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The victory denies Morocco a dream title on home soil, extending their 50-year wait for the trophy, while cementing Senegal’s golden generation as one of the greatest in African history.
The Turning Point: Drama in Stoppage Time
The final, initially a tight tactical battle, descended into chaos deep into stoppage time.
With the score locked at 0-0 in the 98th minute, referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a controversial penalty after a VAR review judged that El Hadji Malick Diouf had fouled Brahim Diaz in the box.
The decision sparked fury on the Senegalese bench. In an unprecedented move, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw signaled for his players to leave the pitch in protest. The game halted for nearly 20 minutes as CAF officials and security personnel worked to restore order and persuade the defending champions to return.
When play finally resumed, the pressure fell on Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz. Attempting an audacious “Panenka” chip to win the tournament, Diaz saw his effort easily caught by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who stood his ground to keep his nation alive.
Gueye’s Moment of Magic
Buoyed by the reprieve, Senegal seized the momentum as the game entered extra time.
Just four minutes into the first period (94th minute), Idrissa Gana Gueye drove through the midfield and laid a pass to Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder shrugged off a challenge from Achraf Hakimi and unleashed a ferocious left-footed drive into the top corner, leaving Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou rooted to the spot.
“We Did It the Hard Way”
Despite a desperate late onslaught from the Atlas Lions—including a header from Nayef Aguerd that crashed off the crossbar—Senegal’s defense, marshaled by captain Kalidou Koulibaly, held firm.
Speaking after lifting the trophy, captain Sadio Mané described the victory as the ultimate test of character.
“We suffered, we fought, and we refused to give up,” Mané stated. “To win against the hosts, with everything that happened tonight, shows the heart of this team. This is for our people.”
Historical Significance
Senegal has now become the first team since 1982 to defeat a host nation in an AFCON final. This triumph adds to their maiden title won in 2021, marking a dominant era for the West African giants.
For Morocco, the defeat serves as a bitter pill. Despite a flawless run to the final and passionate home support, the Atlas Lions failed to capitalize on their golden opportunity, leaving a nation in mourning.
